Perfume and eau de toilette (repeated exposure)
Synthetic fragrance — mixture of substances
Evidence level : Probable BathroomMechanism : Hormonal disruption burden
🟡 Several human studies point the same way, with a plausible biological mechanism, but the evidence is not yet conclusive.
- Where it's found
- Perfume, eau de toilette, eau de Cologne applied directly to the skin, often several times a day.
- Suspected mechanism
- Unlike other cosmetics, perfume is applied directly to the skin repeatedly, which increases cumulative absorption. It combines several families of substances at once: bioaccumulative synthetic musks (musk ambrette has been specifically linked to early puberty in girls in a study published in Endocrinology), phthalates used as fragrance fixatives, and sometimes dyes suspected of being carcinogenic-mutagenic-reprotoxic, as identified by the consumer magazine 60 Millions de consommateurs.
- Suggested alternative
- Reduce application frequency (a bottle lasts longer), favor "phthalate-free" formulations when labeled. A 2023 study of 41 women showed a measurable drop in urinary biomarkers after 28 days without phthalates or parabens.

Including a factor does not mean it causes infertility: it is simply worth monitoring, depending on its level of evidence.
